So you must have seen many reviews on theROG Phone 3 by now, so I am going to do this a little differently. Instead of focusing on the specs & featuresthat you already know about, I’ll tell you why the features it offers are important forme and why I bought this over the Oneplus 8 Pro, and I really didn’t want to keepthis video long, but after crossing the 2500 word mark on the script, I just said it, so feel free to use the timestamp navigation. The first thing you’ll notice about theROG phone 3 is how tall this is. It’s almost as wide as my iPad Mini’sscreen with a display that is 19.5:9 in its aspect ratio, and it is also significantlytaller than my Oneplus 6, which was already a big phone. They probably did this to keep more screenvisible when you have it covered with hands on the sides while playing games, but thephone is still quite manageable for me because it’s not much wider than other flagships, and it’s sides are actually pretty thin because of its curved shape.
Because of its size, it becomes a really greatdevice for watching movies and videos and not only for gaming. The weight is of course another thing thatyou will immediately notice, because this is amongst the heaviest flagships at 240 grams, and this will become even heavier if you apply a tempered glass screen protector on it, alongwith its cover. It is something that I have gotten used to,but this could be the biggest factor that drives people away from buying this phone. But thankfully the cover they provide in thebox is very lightweight, and it also lets you touch the body of the phone when you useit. The exposed areas let it dissipate heat easily, and even though the media didn’t like how they toned down its gamery aesthetics comparedto the last version, I think it looks really great once you put its cover on, which mostpeople do, and you also have a selection of other interesting covers you can choose from, even though the one they give you in the box is probably the best one.
All the space on this phone is very well utilized, because in addition to the side bezels that let you hold it easily in landscape, it alsopacks the front camera, so you won’t need to have any punch holes or slide out mechanisms,it let’s it have a notification LED which I like the presence of, and its best featureis of course the excellent front facing stereo speakers, which was one of the main reasonsI decided to get this phone. I am not sure if people really understandhow much external speakers matter, but these days I watch a lot of short videos, and theyare in multiple short periods instead of one long sitting, so not needing earphones towatch videos is really amazing. these speakers are even better than I wasexpecting after watching the reviews, they actually project sound outward towards yourears, and it creates a really good stereo effect. They are so good that you can actually feelthe sound stage with these speakers with some imaging for instruments, and the balance andseparation also makes it feel like the sound is coming from a central unit on the screeninstead of 2 speakers on the sides, which I have never felt on a phone. This also means that you can set ringtonesthat will sound very loud and musical on these, and talking on the speakerphone on them isalso a really great experience.
The heavier weight is also a result of actualmetal heatsink that is connected to CPU and even the battery areas, and they have usedactual thermal paste here which is so interesting to see in a phone, and I think that’s whypeople are complaining about this phone heating up, because it’s just transferring the heatfrom the components to your hands, which is actually a sign of this system working well. The 2nd side USB port on the phone is alsoreally nice to have, it is of course meant to be used for your charger and accessorieswhen the phone is in landscape mode, but I also found that it also becomes very convenientto use when you’re using the phone in portrait mode, as the phone charger won’t be interferingwith your grip, and same goes with the wired audio accessories that you may use with yourphone. You can also charge the phone while havinga USB device or an earphone plugged, which can also be super useful, which brings usto the lack of the headphone jack on this 3rd version of the ROG phone, which is actuallya bigger deal than it seems because on a gaming phone you would want no latency in your audio,so you’d want to use wired gear, and if you have something with an L shaped jack,it also fits in a very weird way with this dongle.
But at least one positive side to this isthat the audio quality with the included Type C to 3.5mm dongle is really good, and it isable to drive my Hifiman HE-4XX really well which require a lot of power, and it is muchlouder and clearer than my OnePlus 6, so I am actually very happy about that. The 6.5 inch 1080p display is of course oneof the fastest ones on the market at 144Hz, and after seeing some videos, I thought thatI won’t be able to notice the difference between 120Hz, and 144Hz, but it is a veryeasy to notice difference that I do find to be significantly better than having a 120Hzdisplay. Also make sure that you’re subscribed tothe channel with bell icon because I’ll also be reviewing this 12000 Rs. gaming mousethat has a joystick Like 120Hz is great, but 144Hz really makesyou go wow when you quickly scroll through the UI on this phone. I’ve just been switching apps and scrollingon this phone all day because it just massages my eyes in such a pleasurable way that I amjust addicted to this now. Even 90 Hz looks like a big downgrade in comparisonand 60 Hz is of course unusable now. Now one big issue that I felt with this displayis that it doesn’t get very dim, so if you’re trying to use it in the dark room it is reallygoing to be too bright.
You can use an app like screen dimmer, butthat does affect the colors and contrast on the screen. The display also switches to 60Hz if you setthe brightness to 20% or lower, even if you have set it manually to higher refresh ratemodes, and this display also faces serious black crush issues with netflix and othervideo apps, but Asus has acknowledged some of these issues to be a problem and they areworking on fixing it, so I think they should be able to fix this, at least with netflix, and I’ll have the updates about this in a pinned comment, so make sure you read that. Other than that, this is a really good displaythat can be very color accurate. It supports HDR10+ and it gets plenty brightto be readable outside, and the contrast ratio on its OLED screen also makes everything lookreally great. You can quickly change screen refresh ratefrom the quick settings menu which is great, and this can actually be overclocked to 160Hzby a trick that I’ll link to in the video description. The face unlock does its job very fast, andthe optical in display fingerprint sensor is also fast and works well, though it didmiss my registered thumb a couple of times, so I didn’t mind the older technology. The excellent vibration motor was a big stepup from my older phone, and it really makes this phone feel high quality. I have to type a lot on my phone, so the tightvibrations from this motor really make that experience enjoyable, and it is close to thevibration motors you have in iPhones. Coming to the software.
I have very good andsome not so good things to say about it. So for gaming, Asus has REALLY designed anexemplary software experience that other phones are not able to touch. The Air triggers are very customizable, andlet you do all kinds of things on the screen, and all the high performance modes for consistentlysmooth gaming experience are also great, and while for everyday use, this software is good,I think they could have made some small changes to make this better. So they do have the functionality that canlet you set different refresh rates for different apps, but it’s not possible to use it ina simple way with apps that are not games, because you’ll have to set regular appsas games, but then that is not possible for some apps like Netflix, and you also get theunnecessary overlay of the gaming UI sometimes. It is a similar case with the theme app, becausewhile it allows you to have a stock theme set, which is nice, it doesn’t let you changethe accent colors in the UI without also applying these not so good themes, many of which areactually paid even after being low quality. The air triggers could also have been betterutilized for general use, while you can enable them in most non gaming apps, and use it todo things like scrolling in landscape by setting macros, which is crazy to see on a phone, this is not possible in portrait mode, so for example many people wanted to use thesetriggers for actions like scrolling, but that’s not possible.
But you can at least assign an action to aphone squeeze, which basically uses the single air trigger on the side while cleverly makingit look like there are sensors on both sides, and this is quite useful for launching googleassistant or switching auto rotate, and I also like it a lot for launching flashlightwith a long squeeze. But then you don’t have a great customizationwith the on screen navigation buttons like Oneplus phones, so all these little thingsjust make me feel like the user experience could have been improved with some small tweaks. Focusing on a more positive side, the cameraon the phone is really good, and not just for a gaming phone. The primary camera performs well in most conditionseven though it doesn’t have OIS and other flagships may have better dynamic range, thewide angle camera is nice if you just want to view images on phone without zooming in,or if you just want to share on social media, but its quality is not as good as the primarycamera. The macro camera is kind of useless in myopinion, as you can get very similar photos with just taking it with the main camera andzooming in, so I wish they would have just not included it and made the wide angle camerabetter. I’ll link to the excellent photo comparetool that GSM arena has, and you can see that it’s not far away from Galaxy Note 20 oriPhone 11 Pro.
There could be slightly more noise in someareas compared to Samsung, but it’s not that visible unless you’re zooming in. The bigger difference you will see comparedto other phones in this range is if you also want to have a good telephoto, wide angle,or a macro camera, where you will find the more expensive flagships, and the Oneplus8 pro to be better. But overall the camera experience of thisphone is really good, and unless camera is your top priority, this phone will deliverwell. The selfie camera is also great, and the 8Kvideo recording is something everyone has said great things about, and this is a sampleof that. Now the battery life on the ROG phone 3 isof course a very big highlight because the 6000 mAh number is insane. I was able to get 10 hours and 34 minuteswhich included 100 minutes of phone calls and that drained the battery to 7%. I did have the screen at 90Hz, and it wasat 30% brightness, and I mostly used Facebook, youtube, Whatsapp, and browsed internet, buta 10 hour plus screen on time is just insane and this could easily last for 2 days formost people.
Then on the second day I set it to 144Hz tosee if that would drain the battery faster, and again I was able to get 7.3 hours screenon time with the battery still at 32%, so you really don’t need to use lower refreshrates to get great battery life. (mention do it in video) The battery health preserving features onthe phone are also great to have, and while it does charge very fast with the included30w HyperCharger, you can also enable slow charging and limit it to 90%, and that shouldlet this battery hold more charge after one or two years. The pass through mode also allows you to powerthis phone from USB power while gaming, without stressing your battery. The performance of the Snapdragon 865+ isof course the best, and it has ample amount of RAM and storage even on the cheapest variantwithout Aerocooler, so this phone is really not going to slow you down in any way, especiallywith its ultrafast UFS 3.1 storage which makes app launches quick. This is the also best gaming phone right now, with all its dedicated gaming focused features. I play most of the games on my PC becauseit has more RGB, but 2D gaming on phones is something that I really like, and in thatarea this phone is of course excellent.
The alt triggers just have everything thatyou would imagine needing from a feature like this, and they have really put all the featuresthey could in this area. It of course has the ROG logo at back whichis bright and customizable, and you can quickly toggle it from the quick settings menu, soit is a nice party trick to have, even for grown up adults. So overall, the 50,000, and the 58,000 Rs.variants being sold in India are a really good value for money. I really think that the overall package heremakes this phone truly amazing for everyday use, because the features it offers like the144Hz screen and front stereo speakers really add to the everyday smartphone experienceand not just to the gaming experience. I chose this phone over the Oneplus 8 pro, because I really dislike curved screens, and I wanted good stereo speakers along with otherextra features on this phone, and while the camera, and software on Oneplus 8 will bebetter, and it has a sharper display, this phone is also good in those areas, so theseare minor compromises for me. Oneplus 8 pro also has wireless charging, and a water resistance IP rating, which you don't have in this phone, so you'll have todecide how important that is for you. So I hope this video was insightful in understandingwhy the Rog Phone 3 is one of the best phones for technology enthusiasts, I’ll have linksin the video description if you’re interested in buying it.
